{{mbox templates}}
This is the {{tl|ombox}} or '''other pages message box''' meta-template.

It is used to build message box templates for pages of the types: User, Wikipedia, MediaWiki, Template, Help, Portal and any new future namespaces. That is, page types not covered by {{tl|ambox}}, {{tl|tmbox}}, {{tl|imbox}} or {{tl|cmbox}}. Thus, it should ''not'' be used for boxes for articles, talk pages, image pages or category pages.

This template works almost exactly like {{tl|ambox}} and uses the same parameters.

=== We are deploying! ===
After discussions on the [[Template talk:Ombox|talk page]] of this template and announcing it at several places for some time we are now deploying this template. Feel free to convert any message boxes used on "other pages" to use this meta-template. If you find any tricky cases then list them on the talk page of this template and you'll get help.

When this template is used to build other pages message boxes those boxes should contain explanatory texts just like before. (The same texts as before or new improved texts.) If there are more specific images in the boxes or you know a better image, then use them instead of the default images shown here.

=== Usage ===
Simple usage example:

{{ombox | text = Some text.}}

{{ombox | text = Some text.}}
{{clear}}

Complex example:

{{ombox
| type      = style
| image     = [[Image:Emblem-question-yellow.svg|40px]]
| style     = width: 400px;
| textstyle = color: red; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;
| text = The message body text.
}}

{{ombox
| type      = style
| image     = [[Image:Emblem-question-yellow.svg|40px]]
| style     = width: 400px;
| textstyle = color: red; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;
| text = The message body text.
}}
{{clear}}

=== Other pages message box types ===
The following examples use different '''type''' parameters but use no image parameters thus they use the default images for each type.

{{ombox
| type = speedy
| text = type=speedy – Speedy deletion templates.
}}
{{ombox
| type = delete
| text = type=delete – Deletion templates.
}}
{{ombox
| type = content
| text = type=content – Major warnings and problems, such as {{tl|high-risk}}.
}}
{{ombox
| type = style
| text = type=style – Minor warnings and problems. {{tl|intricate}} should perhaps use this type.
}}
{{ombox
| type = notice
| text = type=notice – Notices and messages of any kind, both permanent and temporary. Such as {{tl|guideline}} and {{tl|Wikipedia how to}}.
}}
{{ombox
| type = move
| text = type=move – Merge, split, rename and transwiki messages and proposals.
}}
{{ombox
| type = protection
| text = type=protection – Protection templates such as {{tl|pp-protected}} when shown on "other pages".
}}

=== Examples ===
Some examples using the "notice" style:

{{ombox
| text = No type and no image given ('''default''')
}}
{{ombox
| image = none
| text = No type and '''image=none''' – No image is used and the '''text''' uses the whole message box area.
}}
{{ombox
| image = [[Image:Gnome globe current event.svg|42px]]
| imageright = [[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.svg|40px]]
| text  = image = <nowiki>[[Image:Gnome globe current event.svg|42px]]</nowiki>
imageright = <nowiki>[[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.svg|40px]]</nowiki>
}}

{{ombox
| type       = notice
| image      = [[Image:Blue check.svg|30px]]
| imageright = {{shortcut|WP:SHORT}}
=== Parameters ===
List of all parameters:

{{ombox
| type  = speedy / delete / content / style / notice / move / protection
| image = none / [[Image:Some image.svg|40px]]
| imageright = [[Image:Some image.svg|40px]]
| style = CSS values
| textstyle = CSS values
| text = The message body text.
| small = {{{small|}}} / yes
| smallimage = none / [[Image:Some image.svg|30px]]
| smallimageright = none / [[Image:Some image.svg|30px]]
| smalltext = A shorter message body text.
}}

'''type'''
:If no '''type''' parameter is given the template defaults to type '''notice'''. That means it gets a gray border.

'''image'''
:'''No parameter''' = If no '''image''' parameter is given the template uses a default image. Which default image it uses depends on the '''type''' parameter.
:'''An image''' = Should be an image with usual wiki notation. 40px - 50px width are usually about right depending on the image height to width ratio. (But the message box can handle images of any size.) For example:
::
<nowiki>image = [[Image:Crystal package settings.png|40px]]</nowiki>

:'''none''' = Means that no image is used.

'''imageright'''
:'''No parameter''' = If no '''imageright''' parameter is given then no image is shown on the right side.
:'''An image''' = Should be an image with usual wiki notation. 40px - 50px width are usually about right depending on the image height to width ratio. (But the message box can handle images of any size.) For example:
::
<nowiki>imageright = [[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.png|40px]]</nowiki>

:'''Anything''' = Any other object that you want to show on the right side.

'''style'''
:Optional [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] values used by the entire message box table. Without quotation marks
" "
but with the ending semicolons
;
. For example:
::
style = margin-bottom: 0.5em;

'''textstyle'''
:Optional [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] values used by the text cell. For example:
::
textstyle = text-align: center;

'''text'''
:The message body text.

==== The small parameters ====
{{ombox
| small = yes
| text = small = yes
}}
{{ombox
| type = style
| small = yes
| text = type = style
small = yes
}}
'''small'''
:'''yes''' = Makes it a smaller right floating message box. This also makes the default images smaller. Note that any data fed to the '''smallimage''', '''smallimageright''' and '''smalltext''' parameters is only used if "small=yes". To make it so your template also understands the small parameter you can use this code:
::
<nowiki>small = {{{small|}}}</nowiki>

{{ombox
| small = yes
| image      = [[Image:Replacement filing cabinet.svg|50px]]
| smallimage = [[Image:Replacement filing cabinet.svg|32px]]
| text =
small = yes
image = <nowiki>[[Image:Replacement filing cabinet.svg|50px]]</nowiki>
smallimage = <nowiki>[[Image:Replacement filing cabinet.svg|32px]]</nowiki>
}}
'''smallimage'''
:'''No parameter''' = If no '''smallimage''' parameter is given then this template falls back to use the '''image''' parameter. If the '''image''' parameter also is empty then a small default image is used.
:'''An image''' = Should be an image with usual wiki notation. 30px width is usually about right. For example:
::
<nowiki>smallimage = [[Image:Replacement filing cabinet.svg|30px]]</nowiki>

:'''none''' = Means that no image is used. This overrides any image fed to '''image''', when "small=yes".

{{ombox
| small = yes
| imageright = [[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.png|50px]]
| smallimageright = none
| text =
small = yes
imageright = <nowiki>[[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.png|50px]]</nowiki>
smallimageright = none
}}
'''smallimageright'''
:'''No parameter''' = If no '''smallimageright''' parameter is given then this template falls back to use the '''imageright''' parameter. If the '''imageright''' parameter also is empty then no image is shown on the right side.
:'''An image''' = Should be an image with usual wiki notation. 30px width is usually about right. For example:
::
<nowiki>smallimageright = [[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.png|30px]]</nowiki>

:'''Anything''' = Any other object that you want to show on the right side.
:'''none''' = Means that no right side image is used. This overrides any image fed to '''imageright''', when "small=yes".

'''smalltext'''
:A shorter version of the message body text. If no '''smalltext''' parameter is given then this template falls back to use the '''text''' parameter.

=== Technical details ===
If you need to use special characters in the text parameter then you need to escape them like this:

{{ombox
| text  =

Equal sign = and a start and end brace { } work fine as they are.
But here is a pipe {{!}} and two end braces <nowiki>}}</nowiki>.
And now a pipe and end braces <nowiki>|}}</nowiki>.

}}

{{ombox
| text  =

Equal sign = and a start and end brace { } work fine as they are.
But here is a pipe {{!}} and two end braces <nowiki>}}</nowiki>.
And now a pipe and end braces <nowiki>|}}</nowiki>.

}}

This template uses the ombox CSS classes in [[MediaWiki:Common.css]] for most of its looks, thus it is fully skinnable.

This template calls {{tl|ombox/core}} which holds most of the code for {{tl|ombox}}, while {{tl|ombox}} itself does parameter preprocessing.

Internally this meta-template uses HTML markup instead of wiki markup for the table code. That is the usual way we make meta-templates since wiki markup has several drawbacks. For instance it makes it harder to use [[m:Help:ParserFunctions|parser functions]] and special characters in parameters.

The default images for this meta-template are in png format instead of svg format. The main reason is that some older web browsers have trouble with the transparent background that MediaWiki renders for svg images. The png images here have hand optimised transparent background colour so they look good in all browsers. Note that svg icons only look somewhat bad in the old browsers, thus such hand optimisation is only worth the trouble for very widely used icons.

For more technical details see the [[Template talk:Ombox|talk page]]. Since this template works almost exactly like {{tl|ambox}}, {{tl|tmbox}}, {{tl|imbox}} and {{tl|cmbox}} their talk pages and related pages might also contain more details.
{{mbox templates}}
This is the {{tl|fmbox}} or '''footer & header message box''' template.

It can be used to build message boxes for system messages such as [[MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer-anon]]. It can also be used for footer and header boxes on user pages and for [[Wikipedia:Editnotice|editnotices]].

This template works similarly to {{tl|ambox}} and mostly uses the same parameters. The main differences are that this box is 100% wide and has different colour styles.

=== Usage ===

Simple usage example:

{{fmbox | text = Some text.}}

{{fmbox | text = Some text.}}

Complex example:

{{fmbox
| type      = editnotice
| image     = [[Image:Emblem-question-yellow.svg|40px]]
| style     = border: 1px solid #f4c430;
| textstyle = color: red; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;
| text = The message body text.
}}

{{fmbox
| type = editnotice
| image     = [[Image:Emblem-question-yellow.svg|40px]]
| style     = border: 1px solid #f4c430;
| textstyle = color: red; font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;
| text = The message body text.
}}

=== Footer and header message box types ===

The following examples use different '''type''' parameters but use no image parameters thus they use the default images for each type.

{{fmbox
| type = warning
| text = type=warning – System warning notices such as [[MediaWiki:Revision-info]] and [[MediaWiki:Protectedpagewarning]].
}}

{{fmbox
| type = editnotice
| text = type=editnotice – Transparent background for [[Wikipedia:Editnotice|editnotices]].
}}

{{fmbox
| type = system
| text = type=system – Light grey system message background (default).
}}

=== Other images ===

The default images shown above are mostly for testing and demonstration. In most cases it is more appropriate to use a more specific image or no image at all. These examples use the '''image''' parameter to specify an image other than the default image.

{{fmbox
| image = [[Image:User-info.svg|40px]]
| text  = image = <nowiki>[[Image:User-info.svg|40px]]</nowiki>
This image is used for [[MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer]].
}}
{{fmbox
| image = [[Image:Commons-logo.svg|40x40px]]
| text  = image = <nowiki>[[Image:Commons-logo.svg|40x40px]]</nowiki>
Note the use of "40x40px" to also limit the height of the image. This image is used for [[MediaWiki:Sharedupload-desc-here]].
}}

=== Special ===

Some other parameter combinations.

{{fmbox
| text = Default image given (no '''image=''' specified)
}}
{{fmbox
| image = none
| text = '''image=none''' – No image is used and the '''text''' uses the whole message box area.
}}
{{fmbox
| image = [[Image:User-info.svg|40px]]
| imageright = [[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.svg|40px]]
| text  = image = <nowiki>[[Image:User-info.svg|40px]]</nowiki>
imageright = <nowiki>[[Image:Nuvola apps bookcase.svg|40px]]</nowiki>
| id = CSS id
| class = CSS class names
| style = CSS values
| textstyle = CSS values

'''type'''
:If no '''type''' parameter is given the template defaults to type '''system'''. That means it gets a light grey background.

::
<nowiki>image = [[Image:User-info.svg|40px]]</nowiki>

:'''none''' = Means that no image is used.

'''imageright'''
:'''No parameter''' = If no '''imageright''' parameter is given then no image is shown on the right side.
:'''An image''' = Should be an image with usual wiki notation. 40px - 50px width are usually about right depending on the image height to width ratio. (But the message box can handle images of any size.) For example:
:'''Anything''' = Any other object that you want to show on the right side.

'''id'''
:Optional [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] id used by the entire message box table. Without quotation marks
" "
. Mostly meant to be used to tag a message box with its name, to make it easy to detect the presence of the message from javascript. For instance [[MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer]] would use:
::
id = sp-contributions-footer

'''class'''
:Optional [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] class names used by the entire message box table. Without quotation marks
" "
. Mostly meant to be used to tag a message box with its name so it can be individually skinned. For instance [[MediaWiki:Sp-contributions-footer]] would use:
::
class = sp-contributions-footer

'''style'''
:Optional [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] values used by the entire message box table. Without quotation marks
" "
but with the ending semicolons
;
. For example:
::
style = margin-top: 1em;

'''textstyle'''
:Optional [[Cascading Style Sheets|CSS]] values used by the text cell. For example:
::
textstyle = font-size: 90%; text-align: center;

'''text'''
:The message body text.

=== Technical details ===

This template currently uses hard coded styles and class names. Later it will only use CSS classes making it easier to skin. (In the meantime it can be skinned by using the "
!important
" keyword.)

If you need to make a box that is less than 100% wide, then do ''not'' use this box, instead use the {{tl|ombox}}. Since this box doesn't have the "1px empty image cell" code that makes it so the other mboxes get proper box flow in all browsers when less than 100% wide.

If you need to use special characters in the text parameter then you need to escape them like this:

{{fmbox
| text  =

Equal sign = and a start and end brace { } work fine as they are.
But here is a pipe {{!}} and two end braces <nowiki>}}</nowiki>.
And now a pipe and end braces <nowiki>|}}</nowiki>.

}}

{{fmbox
| text  =

Equal sign = and a start and end brace { } work fine as they are.
But here is a pipe {{!}} and two end braces <nowiki>}}</nowiki>.
And now a pipe and end braces <nowiki>|}}</nowiki>.

}}

Internally this meta-template uses HTML wikimarkup instead of wikimarkup for the table code. That is the usual way we make meta-templates since wikimarkup has several drawbacks. For instance it makes it harder to use [[m:Help:ParserFunctions|parser functions]] and some special characters in parameters.

'''Note to admins:''' MediaWiki does not parse and convert HTML wikimarkup in system messages the same way as it does for normal pages. This means for instance that
<br>
is not automatically converted to
<br />
and missing
</td>
and
</tr>
tags are not automatically added. Thus see to that any HTML code you use in system messages are valid XHTML. That is, close all tags that you begin. However, regular wikimarkup works fine in most system messages.

For more technical details see the [[Template talk:Fmbox|talk page]]. Since this template works almost exactly like {{tl|ambox}}, {{tl|tmbox}}, {{tl|imbox}}, {{tl|cmbox}} and {{tl|ombox}} their talk pages and related pages might also contain more details.
==Usage==
This is the {{tl|notice}} message box.

When used in articles, this message box should only be used for ''important'' comments about the article that cannot be shown using a more specific template. Less important comments should as usual be put as text on the article's talk page instead.

This message box can also be used on other pages, such as on the top of talk or project pages. There it can be used in a more relaxed way.

This box automatically changes style depending on what kind of page it is shown on. That is, it uses the standardised message box styles for the different types of pages.

=== Articles ===

This is how this box looks on article (main space) pages. Here is a code example:

{{notice|Include text here.}}

Which renders like this:

{{Notice|demospace=main|Include text here.}}

An optional '''header''' text can be added. Like this:

{{notice|header=Header text|Include text here.}}

Which renders like this:

{{notice|demospace=main|header=Header text|Include text here.}}

The message box can also take an '''image''' parameter, but that is discouraged when the box is used in articles. See example further down for how to use that parameter.

=== Talk pages ===

This is how this box looks on any talk page. That is, pages that start with "Talk:", "User talk:", "Image talk:" and so on. Here's the basic box again:

{{notice|Include text here.}}

Which renders like this:

{{notice|demospace=talk|Include text here.}}

The '''header''' parameter works on talk pages too. But there is one parameter that only works on talk pages, the '''small''' parameter. Like this:

{{notice|small=yes|header=Header text|Include text here.}}

{{notice|demospace=talk|small=yes|header=Header text|Include text here.}}

As you can see, "small=yes" causes a smaller right floating box with a smaller image and smaller text size.
Let's try the '''image''' parameter too. Like this:

{{notice|small=yes|image=Stop hand nuvola.svg
|header=Header text|Include text here.}}

{{notice|demospace=talk|small=yes|image=Stop hand nuvola.svg|header=Header text|Include text here.}}
=== Image and category pages ===

This is how this box looks on image pages:

{{notice|demospace=image|Include text here.}}

This is how this box looks on category pages:

{{notice|demospace=category|Include text here.}}

=== Other pages ===

This is how this box looks on most other pages, such as pages that start with "User:", "Wikipedia:", "Help:" and so on.

{{notice|Include text here.}}

Which renders like this:

{{notice|Include text here.}}

The box can also take an '''image''' parameter. Like this:

{{notice|image=Stop hand nuvola.svg|Include text here.}}

Which renders like this:

{{notice|image=Stop hand nuvola.svg|Include text here.}}

The '''header''' and '''image''' parameters can of course be used at the same time.

=== Using external links ===

In most cases, external links can be used in the template without any complications. However, links containing an equal sign ( = ) are not read properly, because everything on the left of the equal sign is interpreted as a parameter name. This is the suggested work-around:

{{notice|1=Following this parameter, an equal sign in an external link will be read properly.}}

==Usage==
Wraps a short span of text in
<nowiki><syntaxhighlight></nowiki>
tags (see [[mw:Extension:SyntaxHighlight GeSHi]]).  This template should be used for short samples; longer content should use {{tag|pre}} or {{tag|syntaxhighlight}}. See [[Help:Wiki markup]] for an explanation of what the various tags do.{{clarify|reason=[[Help:Wiki markup]] does not mention any such "source" XML tag.}}

If the content includes an equals sign (=), you must specify the parameter explicitly:
<nowiki>{{code|1=date=30 Feb 2010}}</nowiki>
.

The template uses the
<nowiki><syntaxhighlight></nowiki>
tag with the attribute
enclose="none"
. This works like the combination of the
<nowiki>
</nowiki>
and
<nowiki><nowiki></nowiki>
tags, applied to the expanded wikitext. For example,
<nowiki>{{code|some '''wiki''' text}}</nowiki>
will '''''not''''' render the word "wiki" in bold, and will render the tripled-single-quotes:

:{{code|some '''wiki''' text}}

However,
<nowiki>{{code|a {{template}} call}}</nowiki>
will still invoke the template:

:{{code|a {{template}} call}}

Use {{tag|nowiki}} around the template name to avoid this problem:

:{{code|a <nowiki>{{template}}</nowiki> call}}

When used inline with regular text, {{tnull|code}} generally looks best and is easiest to read when it is explicitly spaced apart from the regular text:
:{{code|foo  <nowiki>{{code|bar baz}}</nowiki>  quux.}}
is well spaced:
:foo  {{code|bar baz}}  quux.
versus:
:{{code|foo <nowiki>{{code|bar baz}}</nowiki> quux.}}
which is going to be visually confusing for many:
:foo {{code|bar baz}} quux.
because "foo" and "{{code|bar}}" will seem more closely associated than "{{code|bar}}" and "{{code|baz}}"; the width of the space character in a monospaced font is almost always larger than in a proportional font.

Use parameter {{{2}}} (unnamed, as {{para|2}}, or more explicitly as {{para|lang}}) to specify a language for Extension:SyntaxHighlight GeSHi. This option defaults to plain-text, i.e. no highlighting. There is no highlighting option for wikitext as a markup language, though {{code|html4strict}} and {{code|html5}} are valid values, as are {{code|php}}, {{code|perl}}, {{code|css}}, {{code|javascript}}, {{code|mysql}} and many others. Attempting to use an invalid one causes a list of valid ones to be displayed in place of the template output, when the page is previewed or saved.

This template does not need to be [[Wikipedia:Template substitution|substituted]].

Finally, embedded templates do not function inside {{tnull|code}}; for longer, free-form blocks of code, which can contain templates such as {{tlx|var}} and {{tlx|samp}}, use {{tag|code}} as a wrapper instead of this template.

===Examples===
{| class="wikitable"
! style="width:50%;" | input
{{Lts|{{PAGENAME}}}} needs one parameter, the name of an existing [[Wikipedia:Category|Category]].

Example:
:<nowiki>{{Lcs|Interwiki utility templates}}</nowiki>
appears as:
:{{Lcs|Interwiki utility templates}}
== Documentation ==
[[Template:Lcs]]
is a smaller variant of
[[Template:Lc|Lc]]
with pleasant output also on browsers which don't
support [[interpunct|&middot;]].

[[Template:Lcs|Lcs]]
allows one parameter, the name of an existing
[[Wikipedia:Category|Category]].
It can be used on talk and user
pages related to an existing [[WP:TPG|talk page]]
of the category, but the linked category talk page
might also not yet exist.

=== Usage ===

<nowiki>{{Lcs|category}}</nowiki>
shows links for the specified category

<nowiki>{{Lcs}}</nowiki>
shows links for a category wrt the
<nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki>

{{{!}}
! Code !! Result
{{!}}-
{{TOCright}}
==Usage==
{{Lts|{{PAGENAME}}}} needs one parameter, the name of an existing [[Wikipedia:Category|Category]].

Example:
:<nowiki>{{Lcs|Interwiki utility templates}}</nowiki>
appears as:
:{{Lcs|Interwiki utility templates}}
== Documentation ==
[[Template:Lcs]]
is a smaller variant of
[[Template:Lc|Lc]]
with pleasant output also on browsers which don't
support [[interpunct|&middot;]].

[[Template:Lcs|Lcs]]
allows one parameter, the name of an existing
[[Wikipedia:Category|Category]].
It can be used on talk and user
pages related to an existing [[WP:TPG|talk page]]
of the category, but the linked category talk page
might also not yet exist.

=== Usage ===

<nowiki>{{Lcs|category}}</nowiki>
shows links for the specified category

<nowiki>{{Lcs}}</nowiki>
shows links for a category wrt the
<nowiki>{{PAGENAME}}</nowiki>

=== Example ===
{|
| '''Code''' || '''Result'''
|-
|
<nowiki>{{Lcs|Interwiki utility templates}}</nowiki>

| {{Lcs|Interwiki utility templates}}
|-
|
<nowiki>{{Lcs}}</nowiki>

| {{Lcs}}
|}
''The latter shows bogus links, as long as no category'' {{PAGENAME}} ''exists.''

{{Sex and the law}}
'''Zoophilia and the law''' looks at the laws governing [[zoophilia|human-animal sexual interaction]] (also sometimes known as bestiality or zoophilia) around the world.

Because it is easy to determine when there is a law against, but (for reasons discussed) often less easy to reliably identify when it is legally acceptable, this article focuses upon laws against zoophilia activity and does not attempt to address where it may be legal. Only in a few confirmed cases, where it is clearly permitted, will these be stated.

== Background to the legal framework ==
=== Zoophilia ===
{{Main|Zoophilia}}
Zoophilia is the [[spectrum]] of human-animal sexual interaction. Other than for breeding or veterinary purposes, in many countries humans are frowned upon if they interact with a non-human animal in this manner. Historically, sex with animals has been seen negatively in the West, generally either as a religious offense against God, or as a suspect or abusive act unsuited to the civilized world. Both of these are generally held societal views which persist to the present time.

A pivotal researcher in the field, [[Hani Miletski]] describes<ref>Miltetski, 1999, p.1</ref> how: "Throughout the literature review, it is very obvious that authors perceive sexual relations with animals in very different ways. Definitions of various behaviors and attitudes are often conflicting, leaving the reader confused. Terms such as 'sodomy,' 'zoorasty,' 'zoosexuality,' as well as 'bestiality' and 'zoophilia' are often used, each having a different meaning depending on the author." [[Vern Bullough]], a renowned professor emeritus who reviewed her work, states:<ref>Review of Miletski's book, published in ''Journal of Sex Research,'' May 2003. ([http://www.dynomind.com/p/articles/mi_m2372/is_2_40/ai_105518225 Online version])</ref> "It seems clear from Miletski's summary of the existing literature that very little is actually known about bestiality and there is not anything approaching a consensus as to why animal-human sexual contacts occur... many of the existing reports and studies should be classified more as pseudo-science than serious research."

=== Historical and cultural context ===
{{Main|Historical and cultural perspectives on zoophilia}}
{{Unreferenced section|date=October 2006}}
Historically, European and western views on zoophilia can often be traced back to religious influences and more specifically to the Judeo-Christian-Islamic traditions under which it was viewed as an [[Abomination (Bible)|abomination]] and breach of God's will. During the [[Middle Ages]] this led to people being burned for zoophilia activity, viewed on a par with [[homosexuality]] under the term "[[sodomy]]", as one of the most horrific acts possible from a religious point of view. Animals suspected were also put on trial and faced being killed if found guilty (See: [[Animal trial]]).

In other cultures, it was at times accepted, or tolerated, and at other times [[taboo]] or punished, and this varied very widely.

However an examination of Hittite and Near Eastern Laws (Akkadian/Sumerian) shows the bestiality was punished in these ancient cultures as well. For instance a Hittite law reads "If anyone has sexual relations with a pig or dog, he shall die. He shall bring him to the palace gate (i.e., the royal court). The king may have them (i.e., the human and the animal) killed or he may spare them, but the human shall not approach the king. If an ox leaps on a man (in sexual excitement) the ox shall die; the man shall not die. They shall substitute one sheep for the man and put it to death. If a pig leaps on a man (in sexual excitement), it is not an offense." Additionally "If a man has sexual relations with either a horse or a mule, it is not an offense, but he shall not approach the king, nor shall he become a priest." For further information Martha Roth's 'Law Collections from Mesopotamia and Asia Minor' is an essential text. Because many cultures in Africa and the Americas did not leave written records, the evidence for zoophilia activity arrives to us through the observations of westerners. This can be problematic for creating an overall idea of practice vs. law in these cultures, just as observation among the practice of Bedouins in the 19th century may lead to incorrect conclusions regarding Islamic law since the former did not widely practice the latter despite being considered Muslims. Thus written records are the best indication for what other cultures, such as India or China, have felt about human sexual activities with animals through the ages. Further research needs to be done in these areas but aversions to bestiality are not found only in the West, but also have been documented throughout the world, just as the widespread practice has been documented as existing side by side with laws condemning the activity.

In more recent centuries the subject was studied as a medical aberration, some form of [[throwback]] or degeneracy within medicine, and finally within the 20th century, came to be recognized as a [[sexual orientation]] in many cases.

====Zoophilia and Jewish law====

The important citations for bestiality in the Hebrew Bible can be found in the following laws:
‘Whoever lies with a Beast shall be put to death’ Exodus 22:19
‘Do not have carnal relations with any beast and defile yourself thereby; and let no woman lend herself to a beast to mate with it; it is perversion.’ - Leviticus 18:23
‘If a man has carnal relations with a beast, he shall be put to death; and you shall kill the beast.’ – Leviticus 20:15
‘If a woman approaches any beast to mate with it, you shall kill the woman and the beast; they shall be put to death - their bloodguilt is upon them.’ – Leviticus 20:16
‘accursed is one who lies with any animal.’ And the entire people shall say ‘amen’. – Deuteronomy 27:21

The Mishnah elaborates:
Sanhedrin 7:4 “These are they that are to be stoned: he that has a connection with a beast, and the woman that suffers connection with a beast”

These important passages provide a basis for some understanding of the interpretation of Bestiality that is found later in various legal codes throughout Europe and the United States. Many of them will also appear in some form among legal codes in 17th century Europe.

=== Clinical and scientific context ===
In discussing arguments for and against zoophilia activity, the ''"British Journal of Sexual Medicine"'' commented over 30 years ago, "We are all supposed to condemn bestiality, though only rarely are sound medical or psychological factors advanced."<ref>British Journal of Sexual Medicine (Jan/Feb 1974, p.43)</ref>

People's views appear to depend significantly upon the nature of their interest and nature of exposure to the subject. People often regard it as an extreme form of [[animal cruelty|animal abuse]] and/or indicative of serious psychosexual issues.<ref name="herek_ATLG">The finding that attitudes to alternate sexualities correlate strongly with nature of contact and beliefs, is stated in a variety of research into zoophilia and also mirrored in [[societal attitudes towards homosexuality]], which have been more thoroughly researched over a longer time period. Thus Herek, who established the Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale in psychology, states ''"The ATLG and its subscales are consistently correlated with other theoretically-relevant constructs. Higher scores (more negative attitudes) correlate significantly with high religiosity, lack of contact with gay men and lesbians, adherence to traditional sex-role attitudes, belief in a traditional family ideology, and high levels of dogmatism (Herek, 1987a, 1987b, 1988, 1994; Herek & Glunt, 1993; Herek & Capitanio, 1995, 1996)"'' [http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/atlg.html], and that ''"the strongest predictor of positive attitudes toward homosexuals was that the interviewee knew a gay man or lesbian. The correlation held across each demographic subset represented in the survey--sex, education level, age--bar one: political persuasion. [Conservative men and women]"'' [http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/articles/nowack.html]</ref> Mental health professionals and personal acquaintances of zoophiles who see their relationships over time tend to be less critical, and sometimes supportive.<ref name="herek_ATLG" /> ''[[Ethology|Ethologists]]'' who study and understand animal behaviour and body language, have documented animal sexual advances to human beings and other species, and tend to be matter-of-fact about [[animal sexuality]] and animal approaches to humans; their research into [[animal behavior]], [[emotion in animals|emotion]] and [[animal sexuality|sexuality]] is generally supportive of some of the claims by zoophiles regarding animal cognition, behaviour, and sexual/relational/emotional issues.

Attitudes outside science are discussed in greater length in the article on [[zoophilia]].

=== Legal context ===
Laws on bestiality tend to be shaped by three main factors:
* Animal welfare concerns
* Personal moral views of shapers of opinion
* Cultural beliefs about the act

Issues confusing the matter are that such research as is available is not widely known, and that cases which come to public light may not be representative of the whole spectrum of this behavior.

Posner (1996) states, "there is some evidence that bestiality was particularly reviled because of fear that it would produce monsters... At early [[common law]], there was no offense of cruelty to animals... The focus of <nowiki>[</nowiki>[[cruelty to animals]]<nowiki>]</nowiki> statutes is different from that of the traditional [[sodomy law|sodomy statute]]; anticruelty statutes are concerned with both the treatment of the animal and with the offense to community standards, while anti-bestiality provisions embodied in the sodomy statutes are aimed only at offenses to community standards." <ref name="posner">Posner, Richard, A Guide to America's Sex Laws, The University of Chicago Press, 1996. ISBN 978-0-226-67564-0. Page 207.</ref>

Animal welfare bodies usually, but not always, view zoophilia as a matter of animal abuse, or at the least, of concern. A notable exception is the Swedish Animal Welfare Agency, which in 2005 addressed concerns over a surge in [[horse-ripping]] incidents by reviewing the matter and concluded that although animal cruelty legislation needed updating, a ban on zoophilia activity was not justified by research.

== Difficulty in assessing laws on zoophilia ==
There are two main reasons why it is hard to be certain whether zoophilia acts are legal in a country or area. The terminology used in law may be vague, so it is not clear what is covered, and whilst it is usually clear if a specific law prohibits zoophilia activity, it is not always so clear (for several reasons) whether the absence of an obvious law means the opposite.

=== Vagueness of terms ===
Some countries list laws very clearly, such as the [[United Kingdom]], which specifically prohibits penetration of a human being by the penis of an animal, and penetration of an animal by a human's penis.<ref>"[http://www.opsi.gov.uk/ACTS/acts2003/30042--b.htm Sexual Offences Act 2003]", Office of Public Sector Information. Section 69.</ref>

By contrast many countries are quite vague about the exact scope of law. Terms such as "sex with animals", "sexual contact",<ref>"Sexual contact" - Arizona</ref> "sodomy", "crime against nature",<ref>"Crime against nature" - Michigan</ref> or "bestiality"<ref>"Bestiality" - Canada</ref> are significantly lacking in legal precision, and as with many laws, what may seem very straightforward from a distance is very vague close-up in a courtroom. This also makes them indeterminate and leaves it unclear what exact activities such terms might encompass.<ref>Examples of some hypothetical borderline cases:
* Should lying naked in contact with an animal, as many people do whose pets sleep next to them, be counted as "sexual contact"?
* For people who finding the sensation of fur to be erotic, does this automatically render any contact with animals (eg scratching their heads) a felony?
* What should the law make of the many pet owners and breeders who [[masturbate]] their animals, not for their own pleasure, but because they view that as the ethical, responsible way for a person who owns an animal to handle animal sexuality, and who would see it as a form of cruelty (similar to refusing to squeeze [[anal gland]]s) to refuse to acknowledge the discomfort to an animal of unrelieved libido [http://www.neutering.org]? (And would the morality of the act depend on whether it is 'enjoyed' or not? If so, what about horse breeders?)
* If a girl finds she gets sexually aroused by the feelings and sensuality of [[horse riding|riding a horse]] bareback (as is often noted to be the case), is she enjoying "sexual contact" with an animal?
* Does [[oral sex]] alone, performed by or on an animal, constitute "bestiality"? (Notably, a US court has ruled that in the case of past president [[Bill Clinton]], he did not commit perjury exactly because it was reasonable to have a belief that "sexual relations" did not include oral sex; see [[Lewinsky scandal]].)
* Is [[kissing]] sexual? Does society agree whether allowing a dog to engage in a more than passing [[kiss]] with a human is "sexual contact" or a "crime against nature", should the human not find it repugnant?
These and other examples may serve to indicate not what should or should not be allowed, but rather, that the apparent clarity of an obvious term, is extremely unclear in practice unless very carefully defined.</ref>

=== Difficulty in establishing legality ===
It is difficult to state with certainty which countries beyond these accept zoophilia actions in law. This is for many reasons, the main ones of which are:

==== Assumption of cruelty ====
Even if bestiality is not explicitly prohibited, there are often many other laws which can be used to effectively prosecute cases. For example, most countries have animal cruelty laws, and a prosecutor will argue that all zoophilia activity is animal abuse, even if no harm was done to the animal.<ref>The argument that "all sexual activity with animals is automatically abuse" was made for example, in 1) the 2004 case of [http://pet-abuse.com/cases/2206/FL/US/1 State vs. Mitchell] (Florida), 2) the 2004 Pony case in Utrecht, Holland (cited below), and 3) the 2006 Washington state law which asserts as its foundational premise that "animal cruelty in the first degree is committed when a person knowingly engages in sexual conduct or sexual contact with an animal." [http://washingtonvotes.org/2006-SB-6417 SB-6417 2006]</ref> In some U.S. states, a person who engages in bestiality can be charged with animal "cruelty" even if the animals involved are not injured.<ref name="shelby">http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/article/20110616/NEWS01/106160306/Richland-Co-dog-warden-investigates-bestiality-case-Shelby</ref>

==== Creative law use ====
Some countries have a range of historic but vague laws on their statute books (for example [[sodomy law]]s, "[[crime against nature]]" laws, or other laws based upon the historical religious beliefs of the culture), and will prosecute under that.<ref>For example a man found to have committed rape of a sheep in [[Michigan]] 2006 was not charged with [[animal cruelty]], but with [[crime against nature|crimes against nature]]. It is notable that a first offence of animal cruelty, which includes any "unnecessary neglect, torture, or pain", carries only up to a 93 day sentence ([http://www.animal-law.org/statutes/michigan.htm MI 750.50 section 2(f) and section 4]), whereas a zoophilia act prosecuted as a crime against nature is capable of a 20 year sentence.</ref> Even when these type of laws do not exist, it is often the case that a prosecution will be found on some ground or other, however contrived.<ref name="asb_1">From alt.sex.bestiality [http://www.webcitation.org/query?url=http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/2269/zoocurrent.html&date=2009-10-25+16:54:35]: "Sometimes prosecutors are imaginative, and will creatively apply irrelevant laws. For instance, statutory rape if the animal is less than 18 years old."</ref> Three examples:

* In one case, prosecutors charged the individual with "sex with a minor".

* In the case of [[Kenneth Pinyan]], reports suggest that despite seizing and examining carefully a large number of such videos from the property, no evidence of abuse was found. Not only was there no abuse found, but the state had no law against zoophilia activity at the time. Nonetheless, as one news source comments:
::"It was only after Pinyan died, when law enforcement looked for one way to punish his associates, that the legality of bestiality in Washington State became an issue ... The prosecutor's office wanted to charge [his friend] with animal abuse, but the police found no evidence of abused animals on the many videotapes they collected from his home. As there was no law against humanely [having sex with] one horse, the prosecutors could only charge [him] with trespassing."<ref name="thestranger">{{cite news|url=http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/Content?oid=30811|accessdate=2006-04-30|title=The Animal In You|publisher=The Stranger|date=February–March 2006}}</ref>

* In a 2005 [[Florida]] case, media reports state: "Florida has no law prohibiting sex with animals, so [the defendant] is charged with ... disorderly conduct, specifically a 'breach of the peace by engaging in sexual activity with a dog'..." <ref>[http://www.guidehorse.org/news_guide_dog_abuse.htm Man charged with having intercourse with his Guide Dog]</ref>

On 1 October 2011 the state of Florida State Law 828.126, F.S went into affect, banning sex with animals, except animal husbandry practices, conformation judging practices, or accepted veterinary medical practices.

<ref> http://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2011/0344/BillText/er/PDF </ref>

==== Non-codified cultural prohibitions and social taboos ====

Often there are traditions or unwritten cultural beliefs, such as tribal law or custom, which although not codified as legislation, carry an equal weight to any other law. These are sometimes called [[customary law]], and are one of the main four legal systems in the world.

Finally, whether or not legal, there are often social mores and taboos which frown strongly upon it. For example, even in Sweden, where zoophilia has been legal since 1944, Beetz comments<ref>Ullerstam, 1966, p.119, cited by Beetz, 2002, ''Love Sex and Violence with Animals'', section 5.2.13</ref> on the findings of Ullerstam:
:"It has to be noted in this context, that not having laws against a behavior and acceptance of it by society are two completely different matters... no acceptance of the persons engaging in this kind of sexual activity was adopted by the population. [...] Furthermore, Ullerstam referred to alleged evidence that showed, that many remarkable men had sexual experiences with animals and had to live a life in constant fear because of that. Those men had been widely respected, but would have lost everything if their activities would have become known; all their great contributions would have been forgotten due to a 'primitive moral reaction'."

For these reasons, this article only asserts legality where it is both confirmed and openly acknowledged custom and law that bestiality is legal, and where in fact it is openly confirmed, acknowledged or able to be practiced.

== Common reasons given for laws ==
Laws in the West are in flux at the moment. Some countries such as the UK have recently (2002) relaxed their laws, whilst others (several US states) have recently introduced new ones where none previously existed.

A key factor seems to be the motive behind the change: in the UK the motive was a complete review of all sex offences, which concluded that a [[life sentence]] was inappropriately harsh. By contrast in [[Arizona]] USA, the motive for legislation was a "spate of recent cases" [http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/122006], and the Arizona legislator is quoted in that source as stating:
:"Arizona appears to be in the minority of states that does not make sex with animals a crime. That doesn't necessarily mean we're wrong. But why shouldn't we be in line with everybody else if the rest of the nation thinks it's a problem?"

However, in addition to specific events, much of the motivation behind banning human-animal sex is the personal opinions of single intolerant politicians; [[Joe Arpaio]] of Arizona, [[Bob Lynn]] of Alaska and [[Nan Rich]] of Florida were all responsible for banning zoophilia in their respective states (because of their own personal beliefs)<ref>http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/mar/16/sheriff-says-craigslist-facilitates-bestiality/</ref><ref>http://www.politicsdaily.com/2010/01/27/bill-to-criminalize-bestiality-advances-in-alaska-legislature/</ref><ref name="Fla4">http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-05-06/news/29534132_1_bestiality-bill-house-leaders-new-bill</ref>. Because bestiality is a taboo subject, the ban proposals made by the lone politicians were approved without any debate and without anyone questioning the bans<ref name="Fla 4">http://articles.nydailynews.com/2011-05-06/news/29534132_1_bestiality-bill-house-leaders-new-bill</ref><ref>http://weblogs.sun-sentinel.com/news/politics/dcblog/2011/03/senate_again_passes_bestiality.html</ref>.

In cultures with a strong background in [[Abrahamic religion]]s ([[Judaism]], [[Christianity]], and [[Islam]]), personal or cultural beliefs about [[God]]'s [[bible|Biblical]] laws or [[religion and sexuality|God's plans for human sexuality]] are a strong influencing factor. These beliefs are caused by [[speciesism]] (a bias in favor of humans over other species) and [[anthropocentrism]]<ref name="sciamer">http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=animal-lovers-zoophiles-make-scient-2010-03-24</ref>. Religious-based beliefs are of Abrahamic origin and not of Hindu or Buddhist origin, since eastern religions are more tolerant of zoophilia<ref>http://www.questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=5037624458</ref>.

Against the Abrahamic tradition, in some countries (notably the [[United States]]), courts have ruled that views on morality are not sufficient justification for law (''[[Lawrence vs. Texas]]''). In other cases (''[[Muth v. Frank]]'') have ruled adversely to a broader reading of that case. In two U.S. states, laws prohibiting the act of having sex with an animal were ruled unconstitutional<ref name="MIlaw">http://www.animallaw.info/articles/ovuszoophilia.htm</ref>.

A second major reason is the strong desire of society to outlaw and punish what is perceived to be [[animal cruelty]] and [[animal abuse]]. Cultural assumptions and cases of [[zoosadism]] have left society as a whole wary or hostile towards any belief that animals may engage in sex with humans on a mutual or non-abusive basis. This is partly because of erroneous studies; prior research was performed only on violent, incarcerated abuser populations and [[Zoophilia#Mis-citation of research|mis-cited]] by parties with vested interests -- this was described by professor emeritus [[Vern Bullough]] as "more a [[pseudo-science]] than serious research"<ref name="pseudo">''A contemporary look at sex between humans and animals - Understanding Bestiality & Zoophilia'' by Hani Miletski. Book review, ''Journal of Sex Research'', May, 2003 by Vern L. Bullough [http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2372/is_2_40/ai_105518225/pg_2]</ref>. According to Bullough, this [[argument from ignorance|assumption]] of zoophilia was used for many decades as "proof" that zoosexual activity should be classified as a rare but profound sexual pathology. Although there have been a few cases of zoosadism, there is no link between animal cruelty and non-abusive zoosexual activity. Recent studies<ref name="sciamer">http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=animal-lovers-zoophiles-make-scient-2010-03-24</ref> suggest that the majority of zoophiles are not cruel to animals:

"In recent surveys, the majority of zoophiles scoffed at the notion that they were abusive toward animals in any way — far from it, they said. Many even consider themselves to be animal welfare advocates in addition to zoophiles."<ref name="sciamer">http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=animal-lovers-zoophiles-make-scient-2010-03-24</ref>

A major social factor in the proposed introduction of laws is the coming to light of specific cases to public attention; this was the case in [[Washington (state)|Washington]], [[Missouri]] and [[Arizona]] USA, and also behind recent attempts in 2004 to change the law in the [[Netherlands]].<ref name="Reasons">Washington on the back of the [[Kenneth Pinyan]] case, Missouri following the [[Jerry Springer Show]] episode 'I married a Horse', Arizona following "A spate of incidents" [http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/0525bestiality0525.html], and Holland following a case in [[Utrecht (city)|Utrecht]]: "MPs were outraged at the start of March when a man caught raping a pony in Utrecht could not be punished because he had not broken any law... Veerman will now investigate the possibility of adding sex with animals to the list of acts classified as animal cruelty, news agency ANP reported." [http://www.expatica.com/source/site_article.asp?subchannel_id=19&story_id=6363]</ref> In such cases it often does not seem to matter whether there was abuse or not,<ref name="pinyan">Eg Washington where the police looked for abuse but failed to find any evidence: Pinyan was the passive partner in an act of sexual penetration by a stallion videotaped by a friend. This was the only incident of its kind in the state's history, and it could be said the human, who died from internal injuries, was the victim of his own act. Police concluded despite examination of many video tapes that there was no evidence of animal abuse and that the only crime was the relatively minor one of [[trespass]]. Nonetheless, almost instantly, legislation was proposed in a form of moral panic, covering every aspect conceivable: the act, the videotaping of the act, the knowing granting of permission for the act, the observing of the act. [http://washingtonvotes.org/2006-SB-6417 SB-6417 2006]. In a similar manner, no prosecution for cruelty was ultimately found to be viable either, or indeed brought, in the televised case of the self-confessed Missouri zoophile highlighted on 'Jerry Springer', nor in the self-confessed Philip Buble case. Cases such as these have led commentators to observe that the connection between zoophilia and cruelty seems assumptive at best.</ref> or how rare or commonly such matters arise. Rather it seems to be a case of [[moral panic]], or "[[NIMBY|not in my back yard]]."

Overall much of the concern can be summarized as coming from lack of knowledge, combined with [[wisdom of repugnance|repugnance]] at the concept of human-animal sexuality, presented in a societal context of religious or social abhorrance, and a desire to reduce what is perceived to be abuse. Because laws against zoophilia have been created as a result of [[moral panic]] and not rationality, the reasons for creating these laws have been called "not compelling" and have been described as being "an unjust and unconstitutional infringement on individual liberty."<ref name="interdis">http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/cutteridgepaper.pdf</ref>

== Laws against zoophilia ==
Aggrawal has discussed extensively on laws against zoophilia.<ref name="aggrawal">{{cite book | first=Anil | last=Aggrawal | coauthors= | title=Forensic and Medico-legal Aspects of Sexual Crimes and Unusual Sexual Practices | publisher=[[CRC Press]] | location=Boca Raton | year=2009 | isbn=978-1-4200-4308-2 | curly=true |url=http://crcpress.com/product/isbn/9781420043082}}</ref> It is permitted in a few countries, such as [[Sweden]] and [[Denmark]], although ordinary animal treatment laws apply. In other countries, such as [[Germany]] and [[Russia]], bestiality is legal, but zoophilia [[pornography]] is illegal (2008 in Germany).

Elsewhere in the developed world, it is a prudent assumption that it is illegal or at the very least, against social custom.

There are also commonly laws against forcing another person to engage in zoophilia activity, especially minors (usually considered equivalent to [[rape]]), and laws related to exposing others (either non-consensually or minors) to the sight of a sexual act. In some jurisdictions, laws against zoophilia conduct also include provisions for seizure of animals where convicted.

Sexual handling of an animal for the purposes of [[Veterinarian|veterinary]] practice, or [[animal husbandry]] (breeding), is normally exempted where such laws exist. In public discussion for the recently passed Oregon law, however, one animal shelter's spokesperson wanted the husbandry exemption kept out, as he was concerned that someone might use these "accepted farming practices" as a legal loophole to then have (legal) sexual contact with an animal only for personal enjoyment. One of the legislators responded by asking if they were trying to outlaw an act (of sexual contact), or a state of mind. The veterinary and husbandry exemption was left out of Oregon's law in the final, enacted version.
Possession of pornography was criminalised in the [[Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008]]. Felony class C seriousness level III, seizure of animals).
* Other legislation in progress {{As of|2006|lc=on}}: [[New Jersey]].
* Believed illegal or 'other': [[Pennsylvania]] (18 Pa. C. S. @3101, 3123 and 3124 (1994)), [[Tennessee]] (Tenn. Code. Ann. @39-13-511 (1994) specifically mentioned under [[Public Indecency]] if done in a public place)</ref> explicitly outlaw sex with animals (sometimes under the term of "[[sodomy]]" or "unnatural [[crime against nature]]"). Others do not.

Many U.S. state laws against "sodomy" (generally in the context of heterosexual sodomy, oral sex, anal sex and all homosexual conduct) were repealed or struck down by the courts in [[Lawrence v. Texas]], which ruled that perceived moral disapproval on its own was an insufficient justification for banning a private act.<ref>Sodomy laws in the U.S. [[Uniform Code of Military Justice]], however, still stand, with the criterion being "penetration, however slight."</ref> On the other hand, the 2004 conviction of a man in [[Florida]] ([http://pet-abuse.com/cases/2206/FL/US/1 State vs. Mitchell]) demonstrated that even in states with no specific laws against zoophilia acts, animal cruelty statutes would instead be applied. Similarly, in 2011 a [[Shelby, Ohio]] zoophile who regularly had sex with his dogs was arrested and charged with animal "cruelty", even though no harm was done to his animals and there are no laws specifically prohibiting bestiality in Ohio<ref name="shelby">http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/article/20110616/NEWS01/106160306/Richland-Co-dog-warden-investigates-bestiality-case-Shelby</ref>. An incident similar to the Shelby incident occurred in [[Metairie, Louisiana]] in [[2012]].<ref name="metairie">http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2012/01/metairie_man_admitted_to_havin.html</ref>

[[Muth v. Frank]] showed that some courts might be "desperate to avoid the plain consequences" of Lawrence and may make "narrow and strained" efforts to avoid seeing it as relevant to other consensual private acts beyond the realm of homosexuality.<ref name="MuthvFrank">From main article ''[[Muth v. Frank]]'' - "The grounds for dismissal, that Lawrence had dealt specifically with homosexual sodomy and not other consensual private sexual activity between adults, were considered "narrow and strained" by at least one newspaper, the ''Boston Globe'' [http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2005/08/28/hypocrisy_on_adult_consent/]. As legal scholar Matthew Franck observed, the writer of the opinion, Judge Daniel Manion, must have been "desperate to avoid the plain consequences of the [Supreme] Court's recent precedents on sexual liberty." "</ref>

Finally, the 1999 Philip Buble case showed that when a self-confessed zoophile is assaulted and the assault is motivated by his zoophilia (i.e., [[hate crime]]), a jury can convict the assailant and a judge give a stern sentence, despite the controversial nature of the cause.
=== Pornography laws ===
:''Main articles with legal sections: [[Obscenity]], [[Pornography]], [[Legal status of internet pornography]]''
Animal pornography is governed in the United States by the same [[Miller test]] and [[obscenity law]]s as any other form of pornography. In many countries such as [[Canada]], [[Hungary]] and the Netherlands, such material is legal, although in some countries where zoophilia acts are legal, zoophilia pornography is not (Belgium, Germany, Russia).

Legality of any given pornographic material has three components: legality of production, legality of sale and transportation, and legality of ownership.

In general, animal pornography is legal to produce anywhere that zoophilia activity and the creation of pornography in general are both legal. Laws concerning sale, transmission and ownership vary more widely.
| As with all pornography, considered [[obscene]] if it does not meet the standards of the [[Miller Test]] and therefore is not openly sold, mailed, distributed or imported across state boundaries or within states which prohibit it.
Erotic art, such as animal pornography in cartoons and the like, which does not require the recording of an actual sexual incident, are not usually considered sex with animals by the law, and so their status depends upon more general laws such as legal limits upon obscenity or pornography alone, and the thin line between erotic art and pornography.

=== Religious laws ===
:''main articles: [[Religious law]]
In certain religions, sex with animals was part of the legal framework of a [[theocracy|theocratic]] state, and as such the matter also falls under [[religious law]]. This is particularly the case for [[Abrahamic religion]]s such as [[Judaism]], [[Christianity]] and [[Islam]], although many other religions and traditions such as [[Hindu]], [[Buddhism]] and even [[Satanism]] have religious views and rules on the matter which did not form part of a national legislative regime.

=== Historical and other laws ===
In some countries laws existed against single males living with female animals. For example, an old [[Peru]]vian law prohibited single males from keeping a female [[alpaca]] in their residence.

== Impact of laws ==
Impact of zoophilia laws has been in four main areas:{{cn|date=October 2011}}
# A culture of fear, ignorance or witch-hunting, in which the ''presence'' of a law becomes evidence that a group are inherently ''deserving'' of a law. (A similar effect was noted in respect of the UK's [[Section 28]] law on homosexuality when passed).
# The placing of such people outside the law has led to inhibitions on zoophile's ability to report animal abuse (due to unwillingness to come to legal attention as a witness or otherwise), or alternatively increases zoophile's vulnerability to blackmail (a proportion are reported by vindictive human ex-partners and the like, or the threat used to obtain advantage).
# Reduced ability to determine what, if any, support, counselling or other assistance may be appropriate, or to provide or seek the same openly. (A notable exception is in [[Germany]] where bestiality is legal, and a telephone based charitable crisis support service similar to ''[[Samaritans (charity)|Samaritans]]'' is available)
# The personal impact of living with such fears - of loss of partners, or criminal charges - and the need to maintain secrecy even from loved ones (due to lack of legal protection), is a stressor to zoophiles and their relationships.
# Even perfectly healthy animals in non-abusive relationships can be at higher risk of certain diseases (and lower risk of others) because they are kept unneutered for sexual purposes. Owners may visit a vet less frequently than they would otherwise, fearing awkward question, or discovery of their secret (leading to criminal prosecution to themselves and the death of their pet) which could theoretically jeopardize the health of their animal. To obtain an intact animal a zoophile may unwillingly and/or unwittingly lend support to abusive animal practices like puppy mills.
# It is argued that because humans ''are'' animals, laws prohibiting zoosexual activity are [[speciesist]] and irrationally keep humans separated from other animals.

Brian Cutteridge states the following regarding the above issues:

"Animal sexual autonomy is regularly violated for human financial gain through procedures such as [artificial insemination]. Such procedures are probably more disturbing physically and psychologically than acts of zoophilia would be, yet the issue of consent on the part of the animal is never raised in the discussion of such procedures. To confine the 'right' of any animal strictly to acts of zoophilia is thus to make a law [against zoophilia] based not on reason but on moral prejudice, and to breach the constitutional rights of zoophiles to due process and equality before the law[...] Laws restricting the private conduct of individuals in which 'a person's conduct affects the interests of no person but himself, or need not affect them unless they like,' unjustly constrain the legal and moral rights of such individuals. Laws which criminalize zoophilia based on societal abhorrence of such acts rather than any real harm caused by such acts are an unjust and unconstitutional infringement on individual liberty."<ref name="interdis">http://www.inter-disciplinary.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/cutteridgepaper.pdf</ref>

Connected with this, fear of consequences is reported to prevent zoophiles from seeking clinical advice, for example, by raising zoophilia or losses connected to it with [[physician|doctors]] or [[psychotherapy|therapists]].<ref name="impact1">For example this description by one person of difficulty seeking support after the loss of a dog to [[congenital]] kidney disease despite being able to confide in his wife: "I thought I was O.K., and then I burst into tears in the kitchen and couldn't stop crying. I didn't have any idea how much I loved [my dog] until she was gone... My work was suffering and my relationship with my wife was suffering... After I found myself idly wondering how I'd commit suicide (just as an intellectual exercise, you understand), I realized that something had to be done.... Eventually my doctor referred me to a free counselling service.... Eventually I told him of my sexual relationship with [my dog]. I have to confess that I was expecting him to denounce me and wheel out a straight-jacket."
He continues, "But he surprised me by declaring happily that THAT was the reason I was so feeling so damned rotten. I hadn't lost a dog, I had lost a lover! And I couldn't express that pain to my friends because of the social taboo. Even my wife couldn't fully comprehend the extent of the loss I had suffered. So I was being forced to carry the pain of my loss all alone. That man saved my sanity, and possibly my life." [http://forums.livingwithstyle.com/t28848-whats-like-zoophile-.html]</ref> This is similar to the manner in which homosexuals' issues are under reported in countries where homosexuality is punishable.

Bioethicist [[Jacob M. Appel|Jacob Appel]] of [[New York University]], an opponent of anti-bestiality laws, has stated that such laws are discriminatory; he also states that such laws keep zoophiles "in the shadows" and prevent an accurate assessment of their numbers.<ref>Appel, JM. == Notable cases ==
There are many cases of zoophilia and the law, so only the most notable are related here.
* ''"Freddie the Dolphin"'' (1991, UK) - man accused of masturbating a well known tame [[dolphin]] at sea. Charged with a "lewd act". Acquitted. Expert witnesses testified male dolphins use their [[erection]]s not just sexually, but socially as well, and no sexual inference could be drawn. Judge summing up said of the £30,000 trial cost, "this has been the most expensive lesson in dolphin sociology that he has ever heard of". [http://www.praxagora.com/sierra/flum/9203.htm](dead link)
* [[Kenneth Pinyan]] (2005, USA) - man died following anal penetration by a stallion. Police determined that no cruelty took place. Nonetheless, [[moral panic]] led to rapid introduction of laws in the state involved and a search for grounds to charge someone videotaping the incident with at least an offence of some kind.<ref name="pinyan" />
* [[Sudan]] (February 2006) - man caught having sex with a neighbour's [[goat]], is ordered by the council of [[Elder (administrative title)|elders]] to pay the neighbour a [[dowry]] of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) and marry the animal. [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/4748292.stm]
* [[Cambodia]] (2005) - man caught having a "passionate embrace" in bed with dog, by wife, confessed he loved the dog more and they separated. Cambodian police commented: "As police, we could only solve the problem of his wife then wanting a divorce. We cannot solve the problem of his relationship with his dog, because under Cambodian law it is not strictly illegal... It is amazing, but this husband is not crazy. It seems he is a passionate human being who looked at a dog, and the more he looked, the more passionate he became." [http://www.news24.com/News24/Entertainment/Off_Beat/0,,2-1225-2107_1655555,00.html]
* [[Wisconsin, USA]] (2007) - Bryan James Hathaway was convicted for having sex with a dead deer. The court case raised some interesting legal issues because the statute prohibits sex with animals, but not carcasses. The defence raised the issue that if a dead animal was an animal, at what point would it cease to be an animal. [http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/03/22/deer_man_convicted/]
