== Early life ==
Douglas was born to parents Jack Derry and Claire Spink on {{#formatdate:1971-03-17|mdy}} in [[wikipedia:Pittsburgh|Pittsburgh]], [[wikipedia:Pennsylvania|Pennsylvania]], their second and final child. Raised in the nearby suburb of [[wikipedia:Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania|Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania]], he spent his early years (ages 2-4) pony riding and fox hunting. By the age of 12, he had won two young pony hunter championships. After completing his secondary education at a private academy, he attended [[wikipedia:Reed College|Reed College]] in [[wikipedia:Portland, Oregon|Portland, Oregon]], where he often brought his [[wikipedia:Golden Retriever|Golden Retriever]] ''Gifford'' to class with him.

In 1993, Spink was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology from Reed. Later that summer, he found work at a dog breeding service and it was there that he had his first sexual experience with a canine. The next year he relocated to Chicago where he became married and started a career at the local office of Boston Consulting Group, rising to the position of Financial Director of Safecard Services. At that time he was also accepted into the [[wikipedia:University of Chicago|University of Chicago]]'s Graduate School of Business, from which he earned a [[wikipedia:Master of Business Administration|Master of Business Administration]] (MBA) degree in [[wikipedia:Marketing management|Marketing management]] just 14 months after matriculating there. In 1996, Spink founded the company Timberline Direct, which he sold two years later for US$5.4 million. The organization imported and bred Grand Prix show jumping horses, requiring $30,000 per month to cover operating expenses. He also, along with his wife, ran a Golden Retriever rescue and breeding organisation. The white star Capone donned on his forehead was the inspiration for the identical tattoo on Spink's arm.

At some point in the late 90s, he was [[Outing|outed]] publicly by another zoophile. This perhaps led to the separation with his wife that began shortly afterward and lasted until 2001, though they remained business partners. In 2003, Spink filed to dissolve his marriage contemporaneously with gaining custody of another Golden Retriever, ''Rion''.
