An outbreak of salmonellosis started in Northern Europe in July 2012, caused by ''Salmonella thompson''. The infections were linked to [[smoked salmon]] from the manufacturer Foppen, where the contamination had occurred. A case of widespread infection was detected mid-2012 in seven EU countries. Over 400 people had been infected with ''Salmonella enterica'' serovar Stanley (''S''. Stanley) that usually appears in the regions of Southeast Asia.
