==Composition== ------------------- There are varying amounts of citric acid, fructose, sodium, chloride, potassium based on species. Despite having DNA and albumin, semen is not a significant dietary source of protein. A human ejaculate is a significant dietary source of zinc, however. Some species may produce gelatinous sperm plugs made from proteins (boars, equines) or a waxy substance made of lipids (rodents, reptiles). Urine may be present in the sample, and should be rejected for use in artificial insemination if it is contaminated. Urine may be detected by smelling the sample, and if it has a strong odor, it should be discarded.
