Intimacy may sometimes be a euphemism for sexual intercourse, however may also mean familiarity and attachment between two individuals, whether that be the intimacy of friendship or of lovers.

If one hopes to take any animal as a lover, non-sexual intimacy must be the first step. This is especially important with equines and other large or powerful animals because if they don’t restrain themselves behaviorally (for the sake of the person) then they may injure that human, sometimes quite badly.

Intimacy need not be the romance of dinner-dates and move-marathons; however neither does it hurt! One should spend as much time as reasonable with the animal of choice and attempt to integrate into their culture and social unit, whether pack, herd, or something else entirely.

When one attempts to have relations with wild animals (as some individuals have reportedly done with dolphins and certain other species) this step is extra-crucial. All it takes is one false move for the animal to simply move away and decide to avoid the person afterward, so always proceed very slowly and never attempt to restrain an animal against their will! That can completely destroy whatever foundation exists for the relationship, and it will likely be damaged beyond repair.
