Mating is the term used for sexual activity between two animals and refers almost exclusively to incidents of vaginal sex. If two individuals have [[mated]] before (especially if they are in a monogamous relationship) they are said to be [[mates]].

When two animals mate, they may be doing it either because it is the fertile period or – in some cases – simply due to arousal, boredom, or habit. Mating usually occurs between two members of the same species but even in the wild, [[interspecies]] sex can and does take place.
