CS1 & CS2 templates validate the content of {{Para|language}} against language codes and names supported by MediaWiki. This page lists the language codes and names that MediaWiki supports. Language name and code pairs marked with a super-scripted dagger (<sup>†</sup>) are codes/names that are overridden by codes/names defined in [[Module:Citation/CS1/Configuration]]. See [[#Overridden codes / names|§ Overridden codes / names]]. Use of language codes/names not found in these lists will cause [[Module:Citation/CS1]] to place the article in {{Cl|CS1 maint: unrecognized language‎}}.

{{Lang|la|Nota bene}}: When evaluating the value assigned to {{Para|language}}, [[Module:Citation/CS1]] looks first in MediaWiki's list of language names before looking in the list of language tags. There are several languages that have tags that match the spelling of the language name: [[wikipedia:Fon language|Fon]] (<code>fon</code>), [[wikipedia:Isu language|Isu]] (<code>isu</code>), [[wikipedia:Luo language|Luo]] (<code>luo</code>), [[wikipedia:Tiv language|tiv]] (<code>tiv</code>), [[wikipedia:Vai language|vai]] (<code>vai</code>) and [[wikipedia:Yao language|Yao]] (<code>yao</code>). There are two where the language tag matches the spelling of another language's name:
* <code>ga</code> – language tag for [[wikipedia:Irish language|Irish]] matches spelling of [[wikipedia:Ga language|Ga language]] (<code>gaa</code>)
* <code>ho</code> – language tag for [[wikipedia:Hiri Motu language|Hiri Motu]] matches spelling of [[wikipedia:Ho language|Ho language]] (<code>hoc</code>)
When citing Irish- and Hiri Motu-language sources, use {{Para|language|Irish}} and {{Para|language|Hiri Motu}}.

For these reasons, CS1 & CS2 templates do not support IETF-like tags and associated names. When these names are used in {{Para|language}}, CS1 & CS2 templates will attempt to validate them but such attempts are not likely to succeed.

Codes and names marked with a super-scripted dagger (<sup>†</sup>) are overridden by CS1 & CS2:
* Alemannisch – not an ISO 639 language name; when encountered, CS1 & CS2 treat this as <code>gsw</code> [[wikipedia:Swiss German|Swiss German]].
* <code>als</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:als|en}} (<code>als</code> is the subdomain for the Alemannisch Wikipedia: als.wikipedia.org); CS1 & CS2 use the ISO 639-3 definition: [[wikipedia:Tosk Albanian|Tosk Albanian]].
* <code>bh</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:bh|en}} (<code>bh</code> is the subdomain for the Bhojpuri Wikipedia: bh.wikipedia.org); CS1 & CS2 use a modified form of the ISO 639-1 definition: [[wikipedia:Bihari languages|Bihari languages]].
* Bhojpuri – ISO 639 language code for this language is <code>bho</code>; MediaWiki returns the Bihari languages code: <code>bh</code>; CS1 & CS2 use the correct code <code>bho</code>.
* Blackfoot – not an ISO 639 language name; when encountered, CS1 & CS2 treat this as <code>bla</code> [[wikipedia:Blackfoot language|Blackfoot]].
* <code>bn</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:bn|en}} which is the language [[wikipedia:Exonym and endonym|endonym]]; CS1 & CS2 use the ISO 639-3 definition (the exonym form): [[wikipedia:Bengali language|Bengali]].
* <code>crh</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:crh|en}}; CS1 & CS2 use the ISO 639-3 definition: [[wikipedia:Crimean Tatar language|Crimean Tatar]].
* <code>fkv</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:fkv|en}}; CS1 & CS2 use the English Wikipedia's preferred definition: [[wikipedia:Kven language|Kven]].
* <code>ilo</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:ilo|en}}; CS1 & CS2 use the English Wikipedia's preferred definition: [[wikipedia:Ilocano language|Ilocano]].
* <code>ksh</code> – MediaWiki returns {{#language:ksh|en}}; CS1 & CS2 use the ISO 639-3 definition: [[wikipedia:Colognian|Kölsch]].
* <code>ksh-x-colog</code> – [[wikipedia:Colognian|Colognian]]; there is no ISO 639 code for this language.
* <code>mis-x-ripuar</code> – [[wikipedia:Ripuarian language|Ripuarian]]; there is no ISO 639 code for this language.
* <code>nan-tw</code> – [[wikipedia:Taiwanese Hokkien|Taiwanese Hokkien]]; to distinguish from <code>nan</code> ({{#language:nan|en}}).
* Valencian – not an ISO 639 language name; CS1 & CS2 use an [[wikipedia:IETF language tag|IETF language tag]] <code>ca-valencia</code>, the Valencian variant of Catalan: [[wikipedia:Valencian language|Valencian]].
