Eric Arthur Rowton Gill, British sculptor, engraver, typographer and writer, was born in Brighton, Sussex (now East Sussex) on February 22, 1882 and died on November 17, 1940 in Uxbridge, Middlesex.

Gill designed the typefaces Perpetua, Gill Sans Serif, Joanna and Bunyan.
