This template is used to produce a phonetic or phonemic representation (using the IPA system) of English words or sounds, using ASCII spelling to avoid the need to search for the correct phonetic symbols. The result is wikilinked to Wikipedia:IPA for English. Optionally, an audio file can also be specified.

Usage

The number of parameters is always limited to 33.

Normal usage:

With an audio file:

To change the delimiters (for example, if several instances of the template need to be strung together because of the limit on the number of parameters):

The full range of special values for the first parameter (changing the delimiters and/or specifying that the next parameter is an audio file) is as follows:

  • [] [- -- -] /- -/ AUD -]AUD []AUD -/AUD

The following parameters represent their normal sounds in English:

  • b d f g h k l m n p r s t v w

Other sounds are represented using the following parameters (not all alternatives are given):

  • S (or sh) for "sh", Z (or zh) for "zh" as in "vision"
  • tS (or ch) for "ch", dZ (or J) for "j" as in "jump"
  • T (or th) for "th" as in "think", D (or dh) for "th" as in "they"
  • j (or y) for "y" as in "yes"
  • N (or ng) for "ng" as in "sing"
  • @ for schwa (as in "about" and "China"); @r for schwa+r (as in "better")
  • I, E, &, V, o, U for the short vowels of bit, bet, bat, but, pot, put
  • i:, a:, o:, u: for the long vowels of beat, calm, law, too
  • ar, 3r, or for the r-colored vowels of cart, dirt, sort
  • ei, ou, ai, oi, au for the diphthongs of bait, boat, bite, boy, bout
  • eir, ir, ur for the r-coloured diphthongs of bare, beer, lure
  • I-, U-, o- (or ou-) for instances of those sounds which may alternate with schwa

The following parameters have special meanings:

  • - (hyphen) for a space between words
  • ' (apostrophe) for a primary stress mark (placed before the stressed syllable)
  • , (comma) for a secondary stress mark

Other values used as parameters will be displayed unconverted. (The conversion system is coded in Template:c-en.)
