This template is intended to allow simple standardized links to [[digital object identifier]]s (DOIs). It is now redundant in most cases<!--does not work for some special characters-->, because Wikipedia will automatically parse <nowiki>[[doi:10.1016/j.coi.2004.08.001]]</nowiki> as the link [[doi:10.1016/j.coi.2004.08.001]].

If you do wish to use this template, the basic usage is:
