Column 1 – system
For each quantity units are grouped according to the system(s) to which they belong. These are listed in the first column.
Column 2 – unit
The second column lists the units by name.
Column 3 – code (alternative)
The third column is a list of codes that can be entered when using the template. These can be used as the second or third unnamed parameter. For some units there exist alternative codes, which are listed in brackets. These have been incorporated to make the code more flexible for editors, e.g. °F or F may be entered.
Column 4 – abbreviation
The forth column is a list of abbreviations as displayed by the template.
Column 5 – notes
The notes given in the fifth column may pertain to the units in general or specifically to their use in this template.
Column 6 – conversion factor/SI base unit
The sixth column is a list of conversion factors used by the template to convert to and from the SI base unit for any given quantity.
Column 7 – combinations
The codes listed in the seventh column can be used to produce multiple conversions. They can only be used as the third unnamed parameter, e.g. {{convert|55|nmi|km mi}} produces 55 nautical miles (102 km; 63 mi).
