Usage

This template is used to cite judgments listed in the British and Irish Legal Information Institute (BAILII) database. You should look up the case you wish to cite on BAILII, then refer to the URL of the web page on which the case appears to fill in the information required by the template.

Privy Council cases before May 1996

The URL (web address) format used in BAILII for decisions of the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council up to December 1995 is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/uk/cases/UKPC/[year]/[year]_[num].html". From May 1996 onwards URLs are in the standard form "http://www.bailii.org/uk/cases/UKPC/[year]/[num].html". Between January and April 1996, a mixture of these two URL formats is used.

To specify that a Privy Council case uses the older "http://www.bailii.org/uk/cases/UKPC/[year]/[year]_[num].html" format, add the parameter "|format=1".

Scottish cases

Several different URL formats are used in BAILII for Scottish cases. Use this template to link to Scottish cases as follows:

• Reported in Rettie, Crawford and Melville's Cases Decided in the Court of Session, Court of Justiciary and House of Lords, from July 20, 1873, to August 7, 1874 [from July 27, 1897, to July 20, 1898] ... (4th Series) (1873–1898): type "|reporter=R". You must also use |year=, |volume= and |firstpage=.
• Reported in Fraser's Cases Decided in the Court of Session, Court of Justiciary and House of Lords (5th Series) (1898–1906): type "|reporter=F". You must also use |year=, |volume= and |firstpage=.
• Reported in Cases Decided in the Court of Session, and also in the Court of Justiciary and House of Lords (also known as Session Cases, from 1907): if the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/scot/cases/ScotCS/[year]/[year]_SC_[num].html", type "|reporter=SC". You must also use |year=, |firstpage= and |num=.
• Reported in Justiciary Cases (from 1917): type "|reporter=JC". You must also use |year=, |volume= and |firstpage=.
• High Court of Justiciary and Session Court cases in the URL formats indicated below:
  • If the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/scot/cases/ScotCS/[year]/[CSIH, CSOH or HCJAC]_[num].html", type "|format=1".
  • If the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/scot/cases/ScotCS/[year]/[year][CSIH, CSOH or HCJAC][num].html", type "|format=2".

In addition, for Court of Session cases, you must indicate "scotcase=IH" for Inner House cases, and "scotcase=OH" for Outer House cases.

Parameters

All parameters are optional unless otherwise specified.

Parameter	Description
Case name
litigants	The names of the litigants separated with v or v. for versus (in other words, the case name), like this: "Council of Civil Service Unions v. Minister for the Civil Service".
link	The name of a Wikipedia article about the case, for example: "Council of Civil Service Unions v Minister for the Civil Service". This will be linked to the names of the litigants specified using the |litigants= parameter.
BAILII link (general format): http://www.bailii.org/[country]/cases/court/division/year/num.html#parapara
court	Mandatory: The neutral citation code used by BAILII to identify the court that decided the case, as follows: ECHR: European Court of Human Rights EUECJ: European Court of Justice EWCA: Court of Appeal of England and Wales EWCC: County Court of England and Wales EWHC: High Court of Justice (High Court of England and Wales) EWMC: A magistrates' court in England and Wales EWPCC: Patents County Court of England and Wales IECA: Court of Appeal of Ireland IECCA: Court of Criminal Appeal of Ireland IEHC: High Court of Ireland IESC: Supreme Court of Ireland NICA: Court of Appeal in Northern Ireland NICC: Crown Court in Northern Ireland NIHC: High Court of Justice in Northern Ireland ScotCS: Scottish Court of Session ScotHC: Scottish High Court of Justiciary ScotSC: Scottish Sheriff Court UKHL: House of Lords UKIAT: Asylum and Immigration Tribunal UKPC: Judicial Committee of the Privy Council UKSC: Supreme Court of the United Kingdom UKUT: Upper Tribunal The template currently only handles cases decided by the above courts. division	Mandatory for some cases: For some cases, you will need to enter a code used by BAILII to identify the division of the court that decided the case.
year	Mandatory: the year of the decision.
num	Mandatory: the case number.
para or paras	A paragraph number or range of paragraph numbers (e.g., "113–129" – use an en dash to separate the numbers) of the case that you wish to cite.

format	Mandatory for some cases: type "|format=1" if the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/uk/cases/UKPC/[year]/[year]_[num].html".
BAILII link (some Scottish cases)
reporter	Mandatory for some Session Court and High Court of Justiciary cases: type: "|reporter=R" for those reported in Rettie, Crawford and Melville's Cases Decided in the Court of Session, Court of Justiciary and House of Lords, from July 20, 1873, to August 7, 1874 [from July 27, 1897, to July 20, 1898] ... (4th Series) (1873–1898). "|reporter=F" for those reported in Fraser's Cases Decided in the Court of Session, Court of Justiciary and House of Lords (5th Series) (1898–1906). "|reporter=JC" for those reported in Justiciary Cases (from 1917). volume	Mandatory for some cases: the volume number of the law reports series in which the case appears.
firstpage	Mandatory for some cases: the first page number on which the case appears in a particular law reports series.
scotcase	Mandatory for Session Court cases: type "scotcase=IH" for Inner House cases and "scotcase=OH" for Outer House cases.
format	Mandatory for some cases: type: "|format=1" if the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/scot/cases/ScotCS/[year]/[CSIH, CSOH or HCJAC]_[num].html". "|format=2" if the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/scot/cases/ScotCS/[year]/[year][CSIH, CSOH or HCJAC][num].html". "|format=3" if the URL is in the form "http://www.bailii.org/scot/cases/ScotCS/[year]/[year]_[CSIH, CSOH or HCJAC]_[num].html".
Other information
eucase	Mandatory for some cases: if you are citing a case by the European Court of Justice, you must indicate the case number, like this: "C-46/93".
pinpoint	The page or paragraph number at which information or a quotation you are referring to appears, like this: "528", "p. 528" or "para. 25". When referring to a range of pages or paragraph numbers, separate the starting and ending numbers with an en dash like this: "528–530".
date	The date that the case was decided. You may enter the date in any format accepted by the template {{date}}, such as "22 November 1983" or "1983-11-22". It will appear a day-month-year format.
parallelcite	Parallel citations to the case. Separate the citations with commas, like this: "[1985] A.C. 374, [1984] 3 All E.R. 935".
courtname	The court that decided the case. The name of the court can be wikilinked, like this: "[[Judicial functions of the House of Lords|House of Lords]]". To have the template automatically indicate the court and jurisdiction of a case, type "|courtname=auto". For Privy Council decisions, to indicate the jurisdiction from which the case was appealed, use |juris= together with "|courtname=auto".
juris	The jurisdiction that decided the case, such as "England and Wales" or "Scotland". For Privy Council decisions, if you are not using "|courtname=auto", to achieve a result like "P.C. (on appeal from Jamaica)", use "|courtname=[[Judicial Committee of the Privy Council|P.C.]]" and "|juris=Jamaica". The template will automatically add the words "on appeal from".
ref	This is equivalent to the corresponding parameter in Citation Style 1 templates. Use |ref={{sfnref|short reference text}} to link a citation with the corresponding inline callout {{sfn|short reference text}}. Do not place quotes around the ref value. The values |ref=harv and |ref=none do not have any special meaning.
